Respite care means taking a break from caring, while the person you care for is looked after by someone else. It lets you take time out to look after yourself and helps stop you becoming exhausted and run down.

There are lots of respite care options. They range from getting a volunteer to sit with the person you look after for a few hours, to a short stay in a care home so you can go on holiday.

The person you look after could go to a daycare centre. Or a paid carer could visit them at their home to look after them.

Respite services give you a chance to have a few hours away from the person you care for. Total Health Care Services Ltd.’s respite schemes have trained carers who come to your home and spend time with the person you care for while you are on a break from care.

The carer will not normally provide care, such as personal care, but they will be able to help with basic tasks like making a meal or going out. As well as giving you time to take a break, the person you care for can benefit from spending time with someone different. This means you can take a break even if the person you care for needs a lot of support, including personal care. These services is run effectively by Total Health Care Services Ltd. Services Limited, we have trained care/support workers to effectively carry out the task. The person you care for will usually need an assessment before you can use a sitting service. This could be as simple as talking to Total Health Care Services Ltd. Services Limited, to make sure the person you care for will get on with the carer/support worker that visits. Total Health Care Services Ltd. Services carries out assessment, particularly the support need of the Service User and matches that with the skills of the carer/support worker.

Reasons for Respite/Sitting Service could be:

  • A carer/support worker regularly visits the Service User you care for so that you can take a short break.
  • Someone visiting you for a short time so that you have the chance to talk to someone different.
  • This visit could be to encourage chat with carer and or the service users, this can be helpful because there is a change in personal and not the person you are used to all the time.

This care is given to people whose death is imminent, as well as people who: have an advanced incurable illness, such as cancer, dementia, or motor neurone disease and in some cases stopped treatment to cure or control their disease, thereby allowing them to pass in the way they want, most times peacefully and comfortably.

Some people spend their final days in a hospital, hospice or nursing home, most people want end-of-life care at home, and this has become a preferred option for many. People who ask for this care spend their last moments within their own homes and surrounded by their loved ones.

There are four types of end-of-life care:

Routine home care: to remain in the place you feel most comfortable and safe (home) surrounded by family members and loved ones, while receiving care that focuses on managing symptoms and reducing pain levels as you approach the end of your life.

General inpatient care (GIP): care provided for the management of patients with severe pain and acute or chronic symptom control which cannot be managed in other settings.

    Continuous home care (CHC)

Respite care: The offer of care to end-of-life patients whose carers are on break to take time to look after their own wellbeing.

We have trained carers who offer regular support with many tasks to make you or a loved one feel comfortable and safe during what can be a distressing time. This includes amongst others:

  • Personal care – supporting with bathing, showering, washing and grooming.
  • Support with toileting, including changing continence pads or using a commode.
  • Mobility support, such as help moving position in bed and help with standing or sitting – and using hoists when required.
  • Administering or prompting medication, and supporting with pain management
  • Changing bedding and housekeeping duties
  • Preparing meals and snacks to taste and dietary requirements.
  • Complex care such as changing catheters, stomas and PEG feeding
  • Ongoing companionship and emotional support

  • Supported living is typically defined as housing where support and/or care services are provided to help people to live as independently as possible. Supported living provides people with individual tenancies. This means that they have a home of their own and will benefit from a greater level of autonomy as far as their environment is concerned.

People may live in an individual flat or have a room in a house with two or three other adults with similar support needs. Personalised care and support are designed and provided according to the needs of the individual, with a focus on maintaining, or if appropriate, increasing independence. Visiting support workers will work with individuals to help them live the way they want to and access services and social activities as required. While meals are not provided, support workers can assist with shopping and cooking as needed.

Supported living is typically defined as housing where support and/or care services are provided to help people to live as independently as possible.
